Red Cross thanks volunteers
‘‘Make Time’’ is the theme for the 2016 National Volunteer Week. Running from this Sunday June 19 – to Saturday 25, the national campaign is a call to action for people to make time available for volunteer causes and to experience the many benefits volunteering offers.
Anne Atkinson, herself a volunteer with Red Cross, made time on Monday morning at the Newbury School assembly, to thank the 22 pupils who helped during the annual Red Cross Book Sale.
‘‘The whole class is working towards a Lions award,’’ Anne explains. "They came and helped us set up, and then as individuals during the sale at various times as greeters, tidiers, book packers and kitchen hands.’’
Their contribution, alongside the volunteer efforts of numerous others helped the annual book sale raise around $100,000. As part of her thank you presentation, Anne interviewed the children about their volunteering experience for her Red Cross Ramble radio programme on community station, Access Manawatu.
Meanwhile, the Trustpower Community Awards are open until July 22 for nominations recognising and rewarding the outstanding contributions made by voluntary groups and organisations. Nominations can be made online through the Volunteer Resource Centre Manawatu and Districts website, vrcmanawatu.org.nz
