Red Cross thanks vol­un­teers

‘‘Make Time’’ is the theme for the 2016 Na­tional Vol­un­teer Week. Run­ning from this Sun­day June 19 – to Satur­day 25, the na­tional cam­paign is a call to ac­tion for peo­ple to make time avail­able for vol­un­teer causes and to ex­pe­ri­ence the many ben­e­fits vol­un­teer­ing of­fers.

Anne Atkin­son, her­self a vol­un­teer with Red Cross, made time on Mon­day morn­ing at the New­bury School assem­bly, to thank the 22 pupils who helped dur­ing the an­nual Red Cross Book Sale.

‘‘The whole class is work­ing to­wards a Lions award,’’ Anne ex­plains. "They came and helped us set up, and then as in­di­vid­u­als dur­ing the sale at var­i­ous times as greeters, ti­diers, book pack­ers and kitchen hands.’’

Their con­tri­bu­tion, along­side the vol­un­teer ef­forts of nu­mer­ous oth­ers helped the an­nual book sale raise around $100,000. As part of her thank you pre­sen­ta­tion, Anne in­ter­viewed the chil­dren about their vol­un­teer­ing ex­pe­ri­ence for her Red Cross Ram­ble ra­dio pro­gramme on com­mu­nity sta­tion, Ac­cess Manawatu.

Mean­while, the Trust­power Com­mu­nity Awards are open un­til July 22 for nom­i­na­tions recog­nis­ing and re­ward­ing the out­stand­ing con­tri­bu­tions made by vol­un­tary groups and or­gan­i­sa­tions.
