Montessori centre’s first birthday

The Tribune (NZ) - - NEWS - KAROLINE TUCKEY

One year on from opening, and the Inspiring Minds Montessori early childhood centre has already achieved a full roll.

Students, staff and guests recently shared birthday cake, songs, pumpkin soup and performances at the Matipo St pre-school’s first birthday.

Representing the wider community relationships fostered during the year, students from the Queen Elizabeth College Service Academy visited for the day, presenting what lead teacher Rihana Lathiff describes as a ‘‘mesmerising’’ haka.

Rihana says the party was a great way to acknowledge an exciting and rewarding first 12 months.

‘‘"We’re quite pleased with how it’s progressing. I’ve loved watching the children grow and develop; they are quite free to interact and explore.’’

The customised open-plan education space was created in a 1960s four-bedroom house.

Based on the educational philosophies of Maria Montessori, the Montessori approach to education helps children develop a love of learning by encouraging their own natural interests.

The preschool caters for 25 children between 2 1⁄2 – 6.
