Message from the Mayor

The Tribune (NZ) - - Square Circular - Kia Ora

It's midwinter already and the City hasn't slowed down at all with lots of events happening from sports and motor racing to music festivals and shows. I hope you managed to get along to the very first Thursday Night Street Feast. With Food Trucks and suppliers from all over the lower North Island, it was an overwhelming success. People were stopping in on their way home after work and families came into the City to try some of the wonderful foods on offer. Plans are already being worked on to make future Street Feasts even better. Last month on World Smokefree Day I attended the launch of the Council's new smokefree conditions for outdoor dining which attracted plenty of media attention both regionally and nationally. These new conditions, part of the Council's Signs and Use of Public Places Bylaw, are the next step in Council's educational efforts to discourage smoking. Over the next month or so you will start to see smokefree signs appearing on café tables throughout the City. While it's not a ban, I do hope that the community will respect the request and refrain from smoking in these areas. Together, we can do our part to help the country reach Smokefree Aotearoa by 2025. As from 1 July, there will be an increase in the gate fees charged at the transfer stations at Ashhurst and Bunnythorpe. The increase in fees are for the disposal of general waste, and are necessary to cover the costs associated with the disposal at the transfer stations. Currently the revenue collected does not cover the full costs, and citywide residents are subsidising the shortfall from general rates. The increased prices are necessary to correct the imbalance. Nominations have now opened for the City's annual Civic Honour Awards. These recognise individuals who have given hours of voluntary service over many years to the city and its numerous community organisations. Volunteers often keep sporting clubs and community organisations going and these awards are a fitting way of saying thanks. Nominations close on 22nd July.
