Increased frequency for buses to Ashhurst

The Tribune (NZ) - - NEWS -

From four times a week to four times a day, Ashhurst commuters now have a much better bus service.

A two-year trial of the new services started last week, with four return services a day from the village to the city on weekdays, and a single return trip on Saturdays.

The journey from the Cambridge Ave Plunket Rooms to town takes 30 minutes, with the first morning service timed to arrive at the Main St terminal at 7.35am.

The two other morning services arrive at 8.30am and 10am, with the fourth at 2.20pm.

The last bus of the day departs Main St for Ashhurst at 5.30pm.

Horizons passenger transport committee chairwoman Rachel Keedwell hoped the better service would make people less dependent on cars.

‘‘Out here you had to have a car to get to work. If you are out here and you can’t drive, what are you going to do?’’

Once leaving the village, the bus will be non-stop to Palmerston North, though tweaks could be made if there was demand from those who lived in between.

Keedwell was optimistic that village people would get on board the service, but noted its future hinged on its usage.
