Wow! Our city rates escalated by an average of 3.9 per cent this financial year. That’s the bad news.

Grey Power worked long and hard along with Age Concern to obtain a rates rebate for senior citizens and families on low incomes. With persistence, the amount available was eventually increased annually based on the cost price index.

This year the maximum rebate is $610. The rebate is income tested with a threshold of $24,470 per annum. An applicant may not be entitled to the full amount, but can still obtain a worthwhile rebate.

As the first payments of rates for the 2016-17 year is due at the end of August, the council is gearing up to receive applications for the rebate.

In the first instance contact council this month to make an August appointment to apply for the rebate.

This applies only to those applying in August. One can apply at other times – just drop into the customer service centre and the staff will be happy to help you.
