Plenty to stand for coun­cil seats

Nom­i­na­tions for Palmer­ston North city coun­cil­lors in the forth­com­ing lo­cal body elec­tions opened on Fri­day, and al­ready there are 17 peo­ple con­test­ing the 15 seats on coun­cil.

Seven of these early nom­i­na­tions are from sit­ting coun­cil­lors Rachel Bowen, Adrian Broad, Lew Find­lay, Leonie Hapeta, Bruno Pe­tre­nas, Aleisha Ruther­ford and Tangi Utikere.

Those seek­ing elec­tion to coun­cil for the first time in­clude can­di­date for the 2015 may­oral by­elec­tion Sue Pug­mire, who also stood along­side fel­low nom­i­nees Gabrielle Bundy-Cooke, Lorna John­son and Karen Naylor for the sub­se­quent va­cancy when sit­ting coun­cil­lor Grant Smith was elected mayor.

2013 coun­cil can­di­date El­iz­a­beth Paine is back, joined by first­time can­di­dates Brent Bar­rett, Zul­fiqar Butt, David Chisholm, James Etuale and Sh­eryll Ho­era.

Four of these nom­i­nees have Labour Party af­fil­i­a­tions, one has Green Party af­fil­i­a­tions, with a fur­ther seven de­scrib­ing them­selves as in­de­pen­dent.

As of Mon­day, there were no may­oral can­di­dates. There is still plenty of time though, with nom­i­na­tions clos­ing on Fri­day, Au­gust 12. Nom­i­nee updates can be found on the City Coun­cil web­site your­coun­cil/elec­tions/your­can­di­dates

Coun­cil spon­sored Meet the Can­di­dates ses­sions take place on Wed­nes­day, Au­gust 17 for city coun­cil, Tues­day, Au­gust 23 for may­oral can­di­dates, with a can­di­dates expo on Au­gust 29.

Elec­tion day is Sat­ur­day, Oc­to­ber 8.

Nom­i­na­tions are also open for Hori­zons Re­gional Coun­cil and the MidCen­tral Dis­trict Health Board..
