Plenty to stand for council seats
Nominations for Palmerston North city councillors in the forthcoming local body elections opened on Friday, and already there are 17 people contesting the 15 seats on council.
Seven of these early nominations are from sitting councillors Rachel Bowen, Adrian Broad, Lew Findlay, Leonie Hapeta, Bruno Petrenas, Aleisha Rutherford and Tangi Utikere.
Those seeking election to council for the first time include candidate for the 2015 mayoral byelection Sue Pugmire, who also stood alongside fellow nominees Gabrielle Bundy-Cooke, Lorna Johnson and Karen Naylor for the subsequent vacancy when sitting councillor Grant Smith was elected mayor.
2013 council candidate Elizabeth Paine is back, joined by firsttime candidates Brent Barrett, Zulfiqar Butt, David Chisholm, James Etuale and Sheryll Hoera.
Four of these nominees have Labour Party affiliations, one has Green Party affiliations, with a further seven describing themselves as independent.
As of Monday, there were no mayoral candidates. There is still plenty of time though, with nominations closing on Friday, August 12. Nominee updates can be found on the City Council website pncc.govt.nz/ yourcouncil/elections/yourcandidates
Council sponsored Meet the Candidates sessions take place on Wednesday, August 17 for city council, Tuesday, August 23 for mayoral candidates, with a candidates expo on August 29.
Election day is Saturday, October 8.
Nominations are also open for Horizons Regional Council and the MidCentral District Health Board..
