Zookeeper Sam’s Bad Day by Amy Atkins. Directed by Amy Atkins & Del Costello Tall Poppies Youth Theatre Company Globe 2. July 18- 22. Reviewed by RichardMays.

‘‘Lions and tigers and bears, Oh my?’’

Well, there is a lion who gets bounced from a poetry competition, but this play is really about kiwi and kea and kakapo. There’s also a tuatara, a fruit bat, a penguin and a dog, and they all live happily enough together at Aotearoa Zoo.

And it’s quite an inclusive little community with its anthropomorphic characters organising poetry competitions and quizzes.

But what happens when because of circumstances, some of the animals can’t join in?

It means the amiable Zookeeper Sam has problems to solve.

The play is a promising first effort by Amy Adams, a former member of Tall Poppies. Well suited to the abilities of the junior cast, who put plenty of effort and enjoyment into their multiple roles for younger audiences,
