A prestigious inter-school dance competition, established by the Dean McKerras School of Dance seven years ago, is reaping dividends and bringing hundreds of young dancers to the Regent on Broadway to perform.
The inter-school regional competition is being held at the Regent on August 29 and 30 with the national final also scheduled for here on September 17.
The DanceNZmade competition, which provides opportunities for both teachers and students, is open to primary, intermediate and secondary students in the Manawatu and supplements what’s happening with dance in the Year 1 to 13 school curriculum.
The students compete in the various year groups and also in open categories which are across several year groups.
Dean McKerras created the DanceNZmade brand to utilise the available talent in teaching which benefits both them and the students they teach.
‘‘It gives teachers and students a platform to show and critique the work that’s taking place in schools and enables them to compare what they’re doing with other schools,’’ he says. ‘‘One of the greatest benefits is to inspire students to raise their standard of performance and push the limits.’’
In the last seven years the competition has gone from one twoday event to seven regional competition days and the national final. About 500 students will be involved from around the Manawatu region at the end of August.
Dean explains there are three components to DanceNZmade; ·The inter-school · The syllabus, which is adopted by 15 studios around New Zealand
· Exchange – two days of exchanging great dance through workshops and competition.
When the students arrive on August 29 and 30, they rehearse their entry, watch other students perform, participate in three dance workshops taken by New Zealand dance specialists, then, from 6pm, take part in the competition which is open to the public.
They’ll compete in a range of genres such as hip hop, jazz, musical theatre, lyrical and contemporary with top scoring teams from every school going to the nationals as well as the winners on the night.
This year Dean is introducing a solo category with the top-scoring student winning an LA Dance Tour courtesy of a New Zealand-based company, World Class Dance Tours.
Audiences are invited to the August 29 and 30 evening performances from 6pm at the Regent on Broadway. Bookings at TicketDirect.
Teamwork is essential for inter-school winning teams.
