Former Abbey church comes full circle of faith

Palmerston North’s former Abbey Musical Theatre building has come full circle back to its spiritual roots as it once again becomes home to a church.

The building, on Church St, is the new home of the House of Breakthrough Manawatu church, which is moving into the rear section.

The building was home to the Abbey Musical Theatre in recent years, but was a Baptist church in the 1920s.

Pastor Aaron Taingahue said it was special to see the building return to its roots, while his church had finally found a home.

The House of Breakthrough church originally moved from Gisborne to Palmerston North and made its home in Highbury Ave in 2007.

The church then moved to the school hall at Queen Elizabeth College, where it was based for three years.

‘‘It’s important to form strong relationships through church and that was hard when we were only able to use it one day of the week.

‘‘But now we have our own house. It’s our home for our people,’’ Taingahue said.

The House of Breakthrough church is non-denominational, under the pentecostal umbrella. Taingahue said people of all religions, faiths and beliefs were invited to take part.

Taingahue said the church was aware of the issues of homelessness, beggars, drug addiction and unemployment and wanted to make a difference by supporting people and creating change.

‘‘Our dream is to have a home and safe place for the community to congregate,’’ he said.

His wife, pastor Chontae Taingahue, said the church was vibrant and full of modern music and dance.

Between 60 to 80 people are church members.

She said the church was sup- portive of dance groups and often encouraged them to perform at church.

Palmerston North already had great charities, soup kitchens and ops shops. Their church was looking outside the square for ways they could help and contribute to the community, she said.

While renovations on the rear of the building were still under way, the upstairs part of the building was expected to be occupied by Ignite Kids school daycare.

The church will open officially on August 20.
