The Tribune (NZ) - - NEWS -

It almost looked like Palmerston North City mayor Grant Smith was to be elected again unopposed until a last-minute nomination from Ross Barber in the local government candidate announcements on Friday.

It’s certainly made things more interesting to have someone else throw their hat in the ring to be mayor of our city.

But now it’s up to us to make sure we get out and vote for the people we think will make good decisions for our community.

As our front page story says, local government elections don’t have a very high voter turnout, particularly when voters feel the incumbent is likely to stay put.

Don’t let this stop you from having your say, though, as there’s still a table full of councillors that need to be elected as well.

Join our discussion of the elections on Neighbourly or Facebook.
