The cafe´ on the sunny side of the street

The Tribune (NZ) - - YOUR BODY - BOB WATSON

It may be winter outside but the sun is still shining at The Bees Knees Cafe.

As owner Kathleen Munn says: ’’When the sun’s shining everyone’s smiling.’’

And customers are not only smiling about the sun-filled cafe but also the delicious and wholesome homemade food, served fresh every day of the week.

Hokowhitu’s Bees Knees Cafe has become a popular meeting place for both locals as well as for people from further afield and this is largely due to the cafe’s mouthwatering and wholesome home cooking.

Bees Knees Cafe offers a wide selection of tasty savouries and sandwiches, freshly made crispy salads, a delicious array of cakes and slices and, a winter favourite their soup of the day.

‘‘All our food, apart from the breads, is made on the premises so it has that homemade goodness with plenty of flavour.

‘‘I like to describe it as healthy, tasty food made with love,’’ says Kathleen.

The Bees Knees’ all day breakfasts have become a popular choice for many customers, both during the week as well as over the weekends.

Kathleen says the most popular choices would be the eggs Benedict or the pancakes, served either with berries or bananas and bacon.

‘‘With all our menu choices we can usually provide a gluten free option, and if it’s not listed on the menu, our customers are welcome to ask if we can prepare one specially for them,’’ says Kathleen.

The Bees Knees’ home-made pies are also extremely popular, not only for eating in but also for taking home to enjoy later for lunch or dinner.

Kathleen says her customers have their own special favourites amongst their pie selection, especially the chicken and mushroom, mince or mince and cheese, the beef and Guinness as well as the curried chicken.

Another customer favourite at The Bees Knees Cafe is their selection of home-made relishes, chutneys and jams.

‘‘These are extremely popular and people buy them for themselves or as gifts for friends.

‘‘We love making new flavours and often we’ll have customers bringing in fruits or vegetables if they have an over-supply in their gardens, and we’ll make up some novel chutney or jam.

‘‘I recently made some marrow chutney which was extremely popular and a customer gave us some crab apples so I’ve just made up some crab apple jelly.

‘‘We find that chutneys and jams, as well as the home made fudge, will just walk out the door because they are so fresh and tasty,’’ says Kathleen.

It’s not only human customers who enjoy going to The Bees Knees And as Kathleen says she often has customers out walking their dogs popping in for a coffee and a chat and there’s always a bowl of fresh water waiting outside as well as a little treat for their dogs.

The Bees Knees is open weekdays from 6.30am until 4pm, and from 7am to 2pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays.

The cafe is also available outside these hours for private bookings.

Kathleen says she and her team are happy to discuss any menu options that the group would like.

When not serving customers in the cafe, Kathleen and her team are kept busy providing outcatering for businesses and private functions, where they can supply anything from finger food to formal full course dinners.

So whether you want a quick coffee, a hearty breakfast or a delicious meal for a private function, just pop in and take a seat in the sun or give the friendly team at Bees Knees Cafe a call on (06) 3588399 to make your booking.
