Spending time in the city just got easier
At the beginning of the month, all day parking in metered spaces was introduced around the city centre. This means you can park in the same metered space for as long as you like, provided you pay. The year-long trial runs until July 2017 and follows a successful trial earlier in the year which saw the two hour time limit extended to three hours.
“Palmerston North is a drawcard for shoppers in the wider central North Island. We want to make their whole experience - including parking - an even more positive one,” says Mayor Grant Smith. “We had a great response to the three hour trial and are really looking forward to receiving feedback about the introduction of all day parking. We’re confident it’s going to bring more people into Palmerston North and make our central city even more vibrant.” Already the response from retailers around the city centre to the all day parking trial has been overwhelmingly positive, with visitors and residents also expressing their support. It’s expected that all day parking will be an especially big hit at Christmas when people come to the city from all over the region to shop and go to events. “Christmas is such an important time of year for retailers and other local businesses, and we really expect this to give the local economy an extra boost.” Following a highly successful trial, free parking in metered spaces until 11am on Saturday mornings is now permanent. “The initiative promotes the use of our central city parks at a time on Saturday morning when fewer people are using them. People are also spending more time in the central city and there has only been a small loss in parking revenue,” says Mayor Smith. All day parking is located around the city centre and is clearly marked with new signage and updated payment information at the meter. Payment can be made at the meter using coins, text or credit card. You can choose between eight different payment options depending on how long you want to stay. You can also pay using the Frogparking mobile app. This allows you to make payments from wherever you are in the city so you don’t have to return to your car.
