We Want Your Thoughts

The Tribune (NZ) - - SQUARE CIRCULAR -

Community engagement is an important part of Council’s decision making. It means Council and people talking together to share ideas and build understanding. This helps us make good decisions.

We are currently reviewing our gambling policies. These set the number and location of pokie machines and New Zealand Racing Board venues in Palmerston North. The policies try to balance the social costs of gambling with the benefits from the community grants made by gambling trusts. This is a tricky balance, so we want to know your views. The draft policy proposes a limit of 347 pokie machines. This is the current number of machines in Palmerston North but is a reduction from the current limit of 400 machines. The draft policy continues the banning of venues with pokie machines within 200m of schools and education facilities. The draft policy allows venues to relocate into and within the inner or outer business zones. It also proposes a ban of new pokie machine venues in industrial areas. This is to prevent new venues being established near our most vulnerable communities. Consultation will start on 3 September and you have until 7 Oct to have your say. Go to our website - pncc.govt.nz/consultations - for more information. The website also contains updates on issues we have recently consulted on. And don’t forget, you can always talk with the Mayor or a Councillor about any topic you are interested in – their contact details are on this page.
