FROM THE EDITOR

The Tribune (NZ) - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE -

September is the National Council of Women’s Suffrage month and the occasion is being aptly marked here in Palmerston North with a Meet the Female Candidates session on Sunday.

There are 19 female candidates standing for the Palmerston North City Council, Horizons Regional Council and the Mid-Central District Health Board in the local government elections. It’s excellent to see so many women putting their hands up to be leaders in our community.

Not only will the event honour the work of women like Kate Sheppard and New Zealand’s history as the first self-governing country to give women the vote, but it will be a great chance to hear some strong women speak on issues that affect all of us.

Another celebration of women worth mentioning is the Bride of the Year event held on Monday.

I particularly enjoyed the winner Melissa Bush’s words of wisdom: ’’There are two people in a marriage - one is always right. The other is the husband’’.
