Hurdle cleared for course
Plans for a high ropes course to be set up on Palmerston North’s Railway Land have overcome a crucial obstacle.
City councillors have voted 11-5 to grant a licence to Tekton Ltd to operate the commercial venture on the central city reserve.
For operator Todd Karipa, the breakthrough comes 10 months after first applying to the council for a licence to lease a portion of the land.
Karipa said he had never expected the process to take so long, but he understood the council needed to do things properly. He also respected the views of the Railway Action Group, which opposed the licence.
Group spokeswoman Marilyn Bulloch said she was disappointed to have to fight again to have the land preserved as open green space.
The group had been defending the land from development proposals for 23 years.
