Wild west to draw crowds into Feilding

The Tribune (NZ) - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE - SAM KILMISTER

Cowboys will be bringing their best costumes during Feilding’s Wild Wild West themed rural day.

A bucking bull machine set to test the fit, the brave and the bold is among many of the new attractions to be stationed around the town’s clock tower on Friday for the Manawatu town’s annual rural day.

Feilding and District Promotions project manager Raewyn Loader said the event provided the best school holiday entertainment in the west.

‘‘The brainstorming discussions for the event this year produced some fabulous entertainment ideas.’’

The Best Wild West pet photo competition is another one of the new ideas introduced this year, which will give furry and feathery friends a chance to show off to the camera and is sure to provide hilarity for spectators.

Another new event, run by the Feilding Scouts, is a wild west campsite. The scouts have come up with a novel idea that enables people to work as teams and have a go at setting up a wild west shelter.

The Scouts will provide boxes of mixed equipment to create a tepee or lean-to shelter.

Anyone who said local elections were dead could be right when children go hunting for council and mayoral candidates for a reward.

The bounty hunters will be trying to track down the candidates who are set to be branded on a series of ‘wanted posters’ being put up around town.

Talented buskers will be performing in the Square and a trio of drama students from Feilding High School will perform some wild west skits around town.

The friendly personalities of Feilding will also clash when local businessmen go head-to-head in the gumboot relay race from the saleyards to the clock tower.

Positioning a runner at specific locations, it won’t be a baton that they pass on but rather a gumboot to wear. As not all feet are the same size, runners will have to find a size that will roughly fit each of them.

Also included is live sheep painting, a petting farm, sheep shearing and butter making.
