The Tribune (NZ) - - NEWS -

There were certainly some surprises around the region in the local government election results, but in Palmerston North nobody will be shocked that Grant Smith has been voted back in as our mayor.

It was a shame there were no strong contenders for Smith in the city’s mayoral race but after taking over the mayoralty in the 2015 by-election, Smith can now focus on a full term of leadership in Palmerston North.

With a lot of new faces in the region around him, including Helen Worboys as mayor in Manawatu, Michael Feyen in Horowhenua and Tracey Collis in Tararua, it will be interesting to see how those relationships play out.

There are also a few new faces in our city council and with a few more women sitting at the table we are on our way to having a more diverse council, although the ethnic and cultural diversity is still lacking.
