WELL DONE, WOMEN
The Manawatu Branch of the National Council of Women congratulates all the successful candidates in the local body elections and wishes them well in their terms of office. We particularly congratulate successful new women councillors Lorna Johnson, Karen Naylor and Gabrielle Cooke on the City Council. It is also good to see the re-election of Susan Baty, Leonie Hapeta and Aleisha Rutherford on the PNCC, Rachel Bowen on the Horizons Regional Council and Diane Anderson, Barbara Robson, Karen Naylor and Ann Chapman on the District Health Board.
Prior to the last three local body elections the Manawatu Branch of the National Council of Women has held meetings to encourage women to become involved in local politics, and to provide opportunities for voters to meet women candidates. We are delighted that there is now a gender balance of seven women and eight men on the City Council, that there are four women out of seven members on the District Health Board and one woman out of four members of the Palmerston North Constituency of Horizons Regional Council.
We also want to recognise the excellent performances by the other women who offered to serve the city and district by standing as candidates for these local bodies. We hope that the campaign has been a rewarding experience and that they have been encouraged by their very creditable voting scores to stand again in future elections.
Helen Chong, President, Audrey Jarvis, Immediate Past President, Manawatu Branch, National Council of Women
