Pop legends to perform

The Tribune (NZ) - - SAVOUR -

Palmerston North is one of the select venues for legendary British rock group The Hollies when they tour New Zealand in February.

One of the best-loved bands from the 1960s rock revolution, The Hollies will perform their Highway of Hits New Zealand Tour at five North Island venues from Auckland to Wellington. Their Palmerston North concert is scheduled for Wednesday February 22 at the Regent on Broadway at 7.30pm.

The enduring group is best known for their soaring distinctive harmonies, brilliantly crafted songs and sublime musicianship along with a back catalogue of hugely popular hit songs which have ensured the longevity of the band and its music for over 50 years.

Since their first chart topper in 1965, I’m Alive, they’ve had more hit singles that The Beatles and, along with The Rolling Stones and The Searchers, are one of the few British pop groups from the early ‘60s that have never officially broken up. In their incredible career they’re registered no less than 20 New Zealand Top 10 singles including the classics He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother, Carrie- Anne, Jennifer Eccles, Bus Stop, On A Carousel and chart toppers, Too Young To Be Married, The Air That I Breathe and Stop, Stop Stop.

Original members, powerhouse drummer, Bobby Elliott and masterful guitar player and vocalist Tony Hicks continue to musically drive the band into the group’s sixth decade.

Regent on Broadway general manager Charles Forbes says The Hollies’ February concert is a coup for Palmerston North and a wonderful way to kick off 2017.

‘‘They’ve been here twice in their career, before and after the restoration of the Regent, and clearly regard our city as one of their favourite destinations,’’ Charles says.

Charles has worked with them twice and admires the dedication and commitment they bring to each concert.

‘‘I’d love one of their fans who attended their first Palmerston North concert and still has the programme, to contact me and I’ll ensure he or she meets The Hollies and attends their show,’’ he says.
