Gaming to get Nitro boost
Big screen gaming is about to make an impact in The Square
Gamers are set to take their passion to one of the biggest screens in Palmerston North.
Palmy Unleashed has organised an outdoor gaming competition in The Square, with help from City Library.
Gaming enthusiasts will be able to go head-to-head in an age group competition based around virtual reality games.
People will be able to watch the action on the Central Energy Trust Arena’s mobile big screen.
Those who win their categories will then have the chance to take on stars of the Nitro Circus extreme sports team, including Manawatu’s ownmotocross world champion Levi Sherwood.
Palmy Unleashed co-ordinator SamKershaw was sure the competition was a first for the city.
‘‘The Big Screen Gaming event should attract our youth into the city centre and give them an experience they won’t forget.’’
City council community engagement manager Ian Littleworth said he was keen to see more events like the gaming competition.
‘‘We’ve got an amazing space in the heart of our city which is the perfect location for events and activities.
‘‘As well as this event being a great attraction for gaming enthusiasts, particularly our youth, we hope it will also inspire others to use the city centre as a place to host community events.‘‘
The PlayStation and virtual reality gear are being provided from the library’s Youth Space.
The event starts at 3pm on January 25, but contestants should arrive earlier to register as places may be limited.
The Nitro Circus stars are scheduled to arrive at 4.30pm.
