‘‘There will be quite a range of music, from baroque... to the theme from Schindler's List.’’ Joanna Dann
Palmerston North chamber music group Trio Bella is something of a misnomer. It is a trio with four members.
However, not for much longer - the quartet is about to lose two players. Next month, cellist Joanna Dann and violinist Nathan Pinkney are heading off to university music schools.
Before they go, the combo with flutist Diana Neild and keyboard player Chris Dann, will be giving a thank you concert at St Andrews in the City to supporters and fans, while also raising study funds for Pinkney and Dann.
‘‘And it’s to have a bit of fun before we leave,’’ Pinkney said.
The 21-year-old apprentice electrician, who started playing when he was 8, is off to study for a bachelor of music at the University of Auckland, majoring in violin.
‘‘My goal is to be a professional chamber musician,’’ he said.
Like Dann, Pinkney was homeschooled and grew up in a musical family. His father and two elder brothers also played violin.
Dann, 18, who has been playing since she was 6, is also planning a music degree, majoring in cello performance at the University of Waikato.
‘‘I just want to see where the music leads me - to play in an orchestra, or in a chamber group. I’d quite like to teach, eventually,’’ Dann said.
Dann joined Trio Bella when she was 14, and said the 6pm con- cert on Saturday, January 28 would feature several favourites from the chamber group’s repertoire over the years.
‘‘There will be quite a range of music, from baroque music by Telemann, some Dvorak, to the theme from Schindler’s List.‘‘
Other pieces include the gypsystyled Czardas by Monti that Pinkney said had been arranged specially for violin and cello, and will be one of the duets showcasing the two young players.
The early evening concert will be the last chance to hear Trio Bella for a while, though Dann and Pinkney will be back from time to time on semester breaks.
The pair will be sharing the proceeds from the concert to boost their respective study pools.
