Suspicious fire guts house
House fires and wild weather have stretched emergency services to the limit. Firefighters were called to a blaze in a vacant house on Russell St in Palmerston North about 7.50pm on Sunday. The fire is under investigation and believed to be suspicious. Palmerston North senior station officer Ian King said the fire had gutted the house on what is thought to be a vacant property. ‘‘It’s pretty much ruined the house.’’ Neighbours alerted authorities and King said police and the Fire Service were investigating the cause. Earlier on Sunday, about 4.30pm, fire crews were called to another house fire, on Taylor Ave in Feilding.
