Sus­pi­cious fire guts house

House fires and wild weather have stretched emer­gency ser­vices to the limit. Fire­fight­ers were called to a blaze in a va­cant house on Rus­sell St in Palmer­ston North about 7.50pm on Sun­day. The fire is un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion and be­lieved to be sus­pi­cious. Palmer­ston North se­nior sta­tion of­fi­cer Ian King said the fire had gut­ted the house on what is thought to be a va­cant prop­erty. ‘‘It’s pretty much ru­ined the house.’’ Neigh­bours alerted au­thor­i­ties and King said po­lice and the Fire Ser­vice were in­ves­ti­gat­ing the cause. Ear­lier on Sun­day, about 4.30pm, fire crews were called to an­other house fire, on Tay­lor Ave in Feild­ing.
