1971 Palmer­ston North Cen­ten­nial Ju­bilee Pa­rade When Palmer­ston North turned 100 in 1971, a whole year of events was planned. Held from Au­gust 30, 1970 to Au­gust 30, 1971, th­ese events in­cluded gar­den par­ties, a spe­cially com­mis­sioned opera, a ‘‘Wood­stock’’ style mu­sic fes­ti­val and a visit from Maori Queen Te Arik­inui Dame Te Atairangikaahu. March 13, 1971was the day the ‘‘Peo­ple’s Day Pa­rade’’ came to town, com­plete with 92 floats from so­ci­eties and busi­nesses all around Palmer­ston North that wound right through town be­fore head­ing to the A&P Show­grounds.
