Basement Company auditions
Every performance career starts somewhere. Take Laura Daniel - co-creator of TV3’s Funny Girls, and a regular on Jono and Ben.
Daniel first drew attention during a Palmerston North Girls’ High production of Nunsense in 2006, and for the part she played in its sequel the following year.
That was also when Daniel joined Centrepoint’s Basement Company, and performed in its film noir spoof production of Brain Power directed by Jamie McCaskill.
The Basement Company ‘old girl’ returned to Centrepoint last year to take part in a night of White Rabbit, Red Rabbit.
Other Basement Company alumni include stuntman Jamie Smith, dancer and actor Ria Simmons and playwright Adam Goodall.
The training initiative was set up in 2005 by Centrepoint’s then artistic director Simon Ferry, to give promising secondary drama students a taste of a tertiary level theatre school.
Now entering its thirteenth year, Basement Co is set to relaunch as an intensive theatre training programme for young actors aged 16 to 21 years.
The programme would be overseen by Centrepoint Theatre’s newly appointed creative director Daniel Pengelly, who ran the renowned Court Youth Theatre Company in Christchurch.
‘‘Basement Company’s programme gives professional experience, acting tools, and challenges its members to be conscious and articulate artists,’’ Pengelly said.
Limited places are available to ambitious, committed and talented individuals who will meet weekly to gain exposure to professional acting, directing, and life as a theatre practitioner.
For 2017 company members, the programme will cost $600 - or $150 per term, and can be paid in instalments by prior arrangement.
This covers weekly workshops under the tutelage of professional practitioners, free admission to every Centrepoint mainbill show, and the opportunity to be part of a professional production in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies.
Auditions will be held on Saturday, March 11 at The Dark Room. Name, age and contact details should be sent to Pengelly at Centrepoint.
‘‘Funny Girls’’’ Laura Daniel is an alumnus of Centrepoint’s Basement Company.
