The Tribune (NZ) - - ENJOY -

Each February the Globe Awards celebrate the successes of local theatre from the previous year.

This year the ceremony is being held on Friday and features its usual blend of live entertainment, presentations and, as judge and awards stalwart Sheridan Hickey puts it, ’canapes and conviviality.’

In all 20 productions are up for awards, with the shows running the gamut from AMT’s Sweeney Todd to Pahiatua Repertory’s Beauty and the

Beast and MTI’s The Glass Menagerie. Dozens of individuals have been recognised with nominations, in categories ranging from Best Play and Best Musical to Debut Director and Emerging Performer. Though always well-attended by the theatrical community, their friends and family, the Globe Awards are also open to any member of the public who wishes to join them.

Tickets can be bought online at www.globethe or at the Globe’s Box Office from 10am-2pm, Monday to Friday.

Another regular Globe event are the monthly Sunday Matinees, coordinated by Guy Donaldson. These concerts offer a wealth of top musicianship for a suggested donation of $5. Kicking off the 2017 season at 2.30pm on February 26 will be the Neild Trio - Sylvia on violin and viola, David at the Steinway Concert Grand, and Diana on flute, in settings of music by Ibert, CPE Bach and Lilburn. And these are just two of the many exciting productions heading to the Globe in coming weeks.

Theatre staff look forward to welcoming all these performers and audiences into the facility - which has seen an upgrade of the foyer furniture and a general ’spruce up’ both in front of and behind the scenes.
