Fugue isprelude tojazz-inspiredBach
Fresh from playing all of Bach’s 48 preludes and fugues, Michael Houstoun will perform Bach’s Piano Concerto in D Minor a month later in a version that’s never been heard in New Zealand before.
Jazz impresario Rodger Fox has secured the Callum Au big band arrangement of the celebrated Bach piano concerto while in California this month.
Houstoun has welcomed the opportunity to play it with the Rodger Fox Big Band at another unique and musically groundbreaking event at The Globe on April 22 and 23.
Tickets can be purchased from globe.theatre.co.nz for the two sought-after concerts.
The first Houstoun/Fox concert series in 2015 was so popular that the standing ovations persuaded the musicians to plan another tour this year.
‘‘This is another concert crafted especially for piano and big band. It’s a total creation for ourselves,’’ Fox says.
‘‘For too long there’s been a divide between the genres of classical and jazz. We’re now addressing that and pushing the boundaries in music.’’
As well as Bach, the programme will include music from Prokofiev with three arrangements and compositions from internationally acclaimed jazz composer and arranger Bill Cunliffe.
The idea for the first concert came by chance when both Michael and Rodger were playing separate gigs in Christchurch three years ago. They had an impromptu meeting and decided to keep in email and phone contact.
They quickly realised they were on the same musical page and arranged their first innovative concert the following year. They’re still on the same page and have agreed to a five centre New Zealand tour in April/May, 2017, culminating in Wellington on May 11.
Last year the Rodger Fox Big Band toured with the NZSO in a very popular concert series to prove that classical and jazz musicians can adapt to each other’s world.
"We had two audiences who came together to enjoy both jazz and the classics and I firmly believe they’ll do the same this year," Fox says.
"Michael came fully prepared last time and we’ll be on top of our game when the series begins."
The Rodger Fox Big Band with guest artist Michael Houstoun and special guest, jazz vocalist Erna Ferry perform at The Globe on April 22 at 8pm and April 23 at 2.30pm. Book at globe.theatre.co.nz.
