Drums are beating for Dave
The drums are already beating for one of the world’s greats.
Dave Weckl, a living legend among drummers, is coming to New Zealand next month for a five-venue workshop tour.
Weckl has been inducted into Modern Drummer’s Hall of Fame and has performed with the Chick Corea Electric Band, Mike Stern Trio and has featured with artists such as Paul Simon, Madonna, George Benson, Michel Camilo, Robert Plant and The GRP All-star Big Band.
Weckl is being brought to New Zealand with three other top American jazz artists by the Rodger Fox Big Band. They are Tony Lindsay, lead vocalist for the group Santana, Adam Schroeder, Los Angeles based baritone saxophonist and trumpeter Alex Sipiagin.
The four of them, in concert with the Rodger Fox Big Band, will perform at the 50th Manawatu Jazz Festival as well as Auckland, Upper Hutt, Napier, Christchurch and Wellington.
In four of the five venues including Palmerston North, Rodger Fox and his guest artists will hold workshops leading up to the concerts at night. They include a drum workshop and masterclass from Weckl.
The guests will add a new dimension and expose the students to different styles of jazz and a different level of mastery, Fox says.
