Fire tears through home

The Tribune (NZ) - - CONVERSATIONS -

Three people have escaped from a house fire in Palmerston North.

The fire, believed to have started in the kitchen, tore through the house on Upham Tce in Roslyn, a fire spokesman said.

Palmerston North senior station officer Scott Bell said three people were home at the time of the blaze, about 10am on Friday, but they all escaped without serious injury.

One person was treated for smoke inhalation.

Working smoke alarms in the property were thought to have alerted the occupants to the fire.

‘‘The house is extensively damaged,’’ Bell said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, but it was a timely reminder for people to ‘‘keep looking while you’re cooking’’, he said.

‘‘We have a high proportion of fires that start in the kitchen from unattended cooking.’’
