The pool is cool for winter relay teams

The Tribune (NZ) - - CONVERSATIONS - RICHARD MAYS

Teams of five are set to take an icy leap into swimming pools across the country in a nationwide winter swim relay.

June and July is when the national business house swimming relay takes to public CLM (Community Leisure Management) swimming pools across the country as teams of five strive to set the best possible accumulated times in a series of 4 X 100 metres over seven weeks.

The Lido’s Matt O’Leary said the idea was to get a team of five swimmers together and get practising before completing one relay a week for the seven weeks from June 12.

The relays take place in the John Boldt indoor pool at the Lido Aquatic Centre, the Freyberg Community Pool and at 17 other CLM pools around the country.

‘‘Times and placings will be posted on the CLM website every week. The final times will be taken from the top six relays, dropping out the team’s worst performance. Teams will be able to see where they are placed as motivation to improve their times the following week.’’

The event, which started in 2010, attracts a lot of repeat entries and O’Leary hoped that 40 local teams would take part.

‘‘Many of them are trying to improve their own times week after week, year after year, and that’s a race in itself - one of the races inside the race.’’

Local team Fonterra A1 is reigning national champion.

‘‘They were our first national champion in 2010 and have won it several times since. Its captain Nick Robinson is back to defend the title.’’

Shaw said the relay concept helped with team building, reintroduced people to their community swimming pool, and promoted exercise at a time of the year when the climate was not particularly conducive for maintaining an outdoor regime.

‘‘Swimming is easy on the joints - the water helps support your body, and good for your cardiovascular system. We want to encourage people to enter and enjoy.’’

Stroke is optional and the entry of $130 per team provides entry for relay and for practice sessions, free sauna and spa use during the seven weeks of the contest, and a week’s free trial of the Lido gym.
