Concert band bets on baring all
Winter can be a blast. The awardwinning Manawatu Concert Band is ready to lift any winter gloom and dispel winter chills with a light, warm-hearted variety concert in the Palmerston North Boys’ High School Speirs Centre on Saturday.
Under musical director Peter Ellery, who is supported by coconductor Stephen Wildbore, the band strikes up The Bare Necessities - a programme of multiple musical styles.
It will include iconic cuts of George Gershwin, highlights from Star Wars, a touch of Adele, a splattering of Game of Thrones and a medley from Jesus Christ Superstar.
In keeping with the season, there are symphonic highlights from Frozen to contrast with the summer sounds of The Beach Boys, and, naturally enough, a rendition of the jazzy Bare Necessities from Disney’s animated The Jungle Book.
Another piece that should get the toes tapping will be Leroy Anderson’s Clarinet Candy –a high speed musical sugar rush that showcases the dexterity of the band’s clarinet section.
Other band members will get to showcase their talents as well. There’s Ellery on trombone, and Nadia Duxfield on piano, among others, with a ‘‘Meet the Band’’ section highlighting the different instruments.
Tickets are available from band members, Eventfinda, the Feilding Information Centre (10 Manchester Square, Feilding), or at the door on the night (cash sales only). Adults are $10, students and children $5, and a two adult, three children family, $25. The concert commences at 7.30pm.
