FROM THE EDITOR

The Tribune (NZ) - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE -

It’s a tough time in Ashhurst at the moment, with the Manawatu Gorge closure forcing hundreds of travellers down the town’s streets.

I’ve heard from several residents frustrated with the noise and speed of cars taking over their usually peaceful street.

But not only this, the mighty Manawatu River has ravaged the area and a hefty bill is coming our way to sort out the issues at the Ashhurst Domain.

A large chunk of the domain has been gouged out, thousands of native trees have been washed away and tracks and car parks have been destroyed.

Now follows a lot of work from the Palmerston North City Council to salvage what’s left and to protect the rest - something one resident believes could’ve been done two years ago.

Hopefully the erosion can be stopped in its tracks.
