There is almost nothing that makes me happier than seeing women ascend to high-level leadership roles.

So it’s brilliant to see Heather Shotter appointed as the new chief executive of Palmerston North City Council.

Shotter is the first female chief executive for the council in its 140-year history.

It’s frustrating that this city’s leadership has been without the full benefit of talent, creativity and ideas of half our population for more than 100 years.

This does not represent our reality here in our community, or in the world.

But here is a step forward towards equal participation and power balance between the genders.

It’s important we continue to see more women in leadership roles in every sector because we deserve a seat at the table and we have a lot to bring with us.
