Cars Cruise the Coast.
It may not have been the weather for swimming but who said you can only go to the beach in the summer. A good turn-out braved the chill, arriving at registration in Palmy between 6.30 and 7am, warmed themselves up with hot drinks from the Coffee Go Go girls, only to then be told at the briefing we were all going to be heading to the beach. With the roads being cold, damp and shady in those early hours, we scoped the route to drive in convoy mainly on the Highways, staying away from the back country roads for this run. Leaving Palmerston North we travelled out through Longburn and turned to drive out through Rangiotu, down Himatangi Block Road, back onto the Shannon Highway, then into Kere Kere Road, Ridge Road, Hickford Road, Newth Road before we got back onto the State Highway once again. From here we headed to Waitarere and out to the beach where we stopped for a catch up, pit stop and a few photo opportunities of classic cars by the surf, although the sea was very calm. The day turning out to be crisp with rays of sunshine streaking through the early morning cloud, making for a very pleasant and picturesque drive. From the beach it was back out to the State Highway where we travelled through Levin and onto Ohau, then Manakau before turning right and heading out to Waikawa beach, where we found a small settlement of houses leading down to the river which meanders out to the sea. It seems a beach that not a lot of our CCBC members have been to, or haven’t been there for a very long time. After a short stop it was on the road again heading back to Levin, where seventy five of us enjoyed a well cooked and very well deserved hot kiwi breakfast at Cobb & Co.
The Lucky prizes that were handed out were donated by Danny’s Auto Services. David & Sharron Spall and Lorraine and Danny McKenna. The car of the month was John’s fantastic GMC 1958 V8 truck.
Cans of food donated from the morning were later delivered to Arohanui Hospice in Palmerston North.
