New pre-booked airport bus
Public transport options for passengers wanting to connect with flights into and out of Palmerston North Airport have increased.
InterCity has introduced an 11-seater shuttle connecting the airport to the rest of the company’s long distance bus network, which operates 25 buses through the city every day.
InterCity Group general manager Sam Peale said the service, which costs $10 one way, aims to provide a ‘‘seamless connection’’, and is for booked out-of-town InterCity travellers wanting to catch flights from Palmerston North.
When there is demand, it will run from The Square to the airport at 12.20pm on weekdays, timed to connect with InterCity’s Wellington and New Plymouth services.
The return trip leaves the airport at 12.35pm arriving in The Square at 12.45pm to connect with the 12.55pm InterCity bus to New Plymouth and the 1pm bus to Wellington. Bookings can be made through any InterCity booking agency.
Intercity’s Amy Cooper said the company was encouraged by the forward bookings made since announcing the service.
Palmerston North Airport CEO David Lanham said the shuttle added to the transport options available from town to the airport.
‘‘With over 40 flights per day, more and more of our regional neighbours are selecting [us] as their airport of choice.‘‘
Lanham said regional bus travellers who alight at The Square heading for the airport, could find getting there ‘‘problematical’’ .
‘‘They think, ‘Oh, it’s a taxi ride’. Now they can make one booking with InterCity and be taken there.’’
He said people living in the city and Feilding are already well connected. Horizons suburban buses operate 12 ‘Air Connector’ services a day to the airport during the week, and four on Saturdays as part of the regularly scheduled city-Feilding route.
Other options for those unable or unwilling to use private vehicles, include the Supershuttle hire service and two taxi companies.
