The Tribune (NZ) - - ENJOY -

Experience the thrill of racing inside the comfort of a winter wonderland following in the great tradition of a full Northern Hemisphere Christmas.

The great custom of winter races in the United Kingdom where everyone dresses up and enjoys the trappings of Christmas will be celebrated on Saturday July 8 at the Awapuni Racecourse.

Decorated Christmas trees, wreaths and garlands will welcome patrons to the meeting which is scheduled to start at 12.05pm with the first of eight races. The last race is scheduled for 3.58pm.

The Norwood Farm Machinery Centre’s Christmas Winterfest promises competitive and exciting action, attracting horses from the Manawatu region and beyond that excel in winter racing.

A drawcard attraction is the hospitality package that’s on offer. The package for $120 pp, in the Silks Lounge, includes a reserved table, racebook and pen, buffet lunch that features ham and hot steamed pudding, a cheese platter and a generous beverage allocation.

Sponsorship and Marketing Manager Julie Bowe recommends people should book for this package as soon as possible.

‘‘Brighten up your winter and join the action for the Christmas Winterfest. You’ll enjoy the thrill of racing with your family, friends and colleagues,’’ Julie says.

A week later the Awapuni Racing Centre offers another exciting package. It’s working with the organisers of the Red and Blue Charity Ball and Auction to present a fundraiser that will benefit the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter. Red and blue are the emergency flashing colours when the three services – police, fire and ambulance – are called to action. With their support and the assistance of Creative Catering at Awapuni Racecourse, the Red and Blue Ball will celebrate the role they play and raise funds for the rescue helicopter service.

‘‘We’d love our local community to be part of this initiative and support the boys and girls who every day put their lives on the line to serve and protect the people of Manawatu,’’ Julie says.

‘‘It’s a great chance to dress up, dance the night away and be part of such a worthwhile fundraising project.’’

All those interested should contact the Awapuni Racing Centre on hospitality@manawaturacing.co.nz or 06-356-4940 extn 3.
