Perseverance and hard work pay off

The Tribune (NZ) - - ROBERT J COTTON & SONS -

Palmerston North funeral directors Robert J Cotton & Sons was founded in 1967 and has grown considerably over the years.

Robert was the eldest son of William Cotton who was in the funeral business in Feilding. Robert left school at the age of 14 to help his father, eventually opening his own funeral directing business. Before this Robert had worked at a number of jobs, including as a carpenter.

Robert operated his business out of premises on Tremaine Avenue, which consisted of a mortuary, viewing rooms, a small chapel, an office and a small workshop in which caskets were manufactured.

It was during the early years of the business that current owner Trevor became involved, along with his younger brother Ross. Trevor and Ross both worked for a joinery firm and their boss obligingly allowed them time off work when their father required their help in the funeral business.

Trevor says times weren’t always easy but with hard work and perseverance the business has not only survived but prospered, moving in March 1984 from the Tremaine Avenue site to bigger and better premises, known as Terracehaven, on Main Street, Terrace End. A massive amount of work was undertaken in renovating the buildings on the site. Over the years further alterations have been carried out and the complex now extends over three sections.

The Terracehaven Chapel was extended in 1999 and now can accommodate up to 280 people. The chapel is air-conditioned and equipped with the latest technology. It is looped for the hearing impaired and is easily accessible for those in wheelchairs or on mobility devices.

There are two viewing rooms available to families at any time of the day or night. There is also a family lounge that can be used for small funerals. A separate ministers’ room is also available and this provides direct access into the chapel.

Catering needs are taken care of in the Terracelounge or off site at another venue if required. Off-street parking can accommodate 50 vehicles.

Robert J Cotton & Sons is a monumental agent and can provide help in selecting an appropriate monument.

Trevor, Ruth and Hayden continue to operate the family business with the help of funeral director and embalmer Ross Carey and funeral director Adele Barnett.

Refreshments can be provided in the spacious Terracelounge.

The Terracehaven chapel can accommodate280people and is equipped with the latest technology.
