Saddle Rd gets an upgrade
Upgrade works along Manawatu’s Saddle Rd have begun.
The New Zealand Transport Agency has advised motorists that road maintenance and upgrade works to sections of the Saddle Rd began on Sunday night.
The road, between Ashhurst and Woodville, is under extra pressure following the closure of State Highway 3 through the Manawatu Gorge, and several sections were in need of critical maintenance.
The road, for westbound traffic between Woodville and Ashhurst, was closed on Monday, with the Pahiatua Track as detour.
For eastbound traffic, between Ashhurst and Woodville, a single lane was open on the Sadde Rd.
The westbound lane was expected to be closed between 9am and 3pm on days work goes ahead with decisions about this made on a daily basis.
The road is fully open outside these hours.
The transport agency website said the works were expected to finish on December 31.
The agency has taken over management and maintenance of Saddle Rd from Tararua District Council, and had been doing spot repairs on potholes.
Road users were advised to allow extra time when travelling this route.
The transport agency website can be checked for road information and possible road changes.
Saddle Rd is an alternative route to the Manawatu Gorge which is closed due to a slip. Upgrades to Saddle Rd should be complete by April 2018.
