Sad­dle Rd gets an up­grade

Up­grade works along Manawatu’s Sad­dle Rd have be­gun.

The New Zealand Trans­port Agency has ad­vised mo­torists that road main­te­nance and up­grade works to sec­tions of the Sad­dle Rd be­gan on Sun­day night.

The road, be­tween Ash­hurst and Woodville, is un­der ex­tra pres­sure fol­low­ing the clo­sure of State High­way 3 through the Manawatu Gorge, and sev­eral sec­tions were in need of crit­i­cal main­te­nance.

The road, for west­bound traf­fic be­tween Woodville and Ash­hurst, was closed on Monday, with the Pahiatua Track as de­tour.

For east­bound traf­fic, be­tween Ash­hurst and Woodville, a sin­gle lane was open on the Sadde Rd.

The west­bound lane was ex­pected to be closed be­tween 9am and 3pm on days work goes ahead with de­ci­sions about this made on a daily ba­sis.

The road is fully open out­side these hours.

The trans­port agency web­site said the works were ex­pected to fin­ish on De­cem­ber 31.

The agency has taken over man­age­ment and main­te­nance of Sad­dle Rd from Tararua District Coun­cil, and had been do­ing spot re­pairs on pot­holes.

Road users were ad­vised to al­low ex­tra time when trav­el­ling this route.

The trans­port agency web­site can be checked for road in­for­ma­tion and pos­si­ble road changes.

Sad­dle Rd is an al­ter­na­tive route to the Manawatu Gorge which is closed due to a slip. Up­grades to Sad­dle Rd should be com­plete by April 2018.
