The Tribune (NZ) - - YOUR LOCAL NEWS -

The debate over the Palmerston North City Council’s decision to install LED street lights throughout the city is raging on.

Darkness in our streets is allegedly attracting some unsavoury types, according to a letter writer on our Conversations page (P11), although Neighbourhood Support burglary numbers are down (P4).

The cold is apparently keeping would-be burglars away, as appears to be standard for the winter months.

But I hope the council will look into adding more street light poles before we get to the summer months when burglary numbers rise again and there’s the possibility of culprits taking advantage of dark city streets.

Although, as someone who has been burgled in the light of day, lack of street lighting can’t always be to blame for break-ins.

What’s been happening in your neighbourhood? Has your street changed to LED lights?

Write us a letter, or visit our Neighbourly page to have your say in our poll.
