A special Gallipoli commemoration

The words ‘Chunuk Bair’ resonate like few others down the decades of New Zealand military history. It is a place of historic significance that echoes sacrifice, tragedy and heroism, where soldiers fought courageously and lives were lost.

For the third consecutive year, Palmerston North City Council is hosting ‘Chunuk Bair: Gallipoli Commemoration’ in collaboration with Massey University and the Centenary History Project.

This year, organisers are delighted to have Mesut Uyar, Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales, presenting on ‘The August Offensive and the Ottomans: A Faceless Army’. He will discuss the historic battle from a Turkish perspective.

A graduate of the Turkish Military academy, Uyar completed an MA in politics and a PhD in International Relations at Istanbul University. He has also served as a platoon leader, and company and battalion commander in various infantry units, completing several tours as a United Nations military observer.

Also speaking is Anna Rogers, a respected author and editor. Anna is currently writing a history of New Zealand’s medical services in the First World War and will be presenting ‘Getting it Wrong: Medical Matters at Gallipoli’.

Chunuk Bair: Gallipoli Commemoration is on Tuesday August 8 5.30pm – 8pm at Distinction Hotel. You must register by August 4 to attend at www.massey.ac.nz/ chunukbair.
