Keeping our home a safe city

Over the past few months council has been developing a proposed new vision and goals for our city, which we’ll consult on next year as part of the 10 Year Plan process.

One goal we’ve identified is being a connected and safe city, which demonstrates our ongoing commitment to being a place that is safe for everyone to live, study, work and play.

As the councillor who holds the Safe City and civil defence portfolio, I’m extremely passionate about making sure our city is safe for everyone.

In 2014, Palmerston North was awarded Safe City Accreditation by the World Health Organisation, which means we’ve committed to going above and beyond what is required by law to protect and promote the safety and well-being of our citizens.

This accreditation is not easy to get, and we’ve recently made changes to our Safety Advisory Board to make sure we maintain our status as a safe city.

The board brings together representatives from a range of government and not-for-profit organisations including the council, police, iwi, the MidCentral District Health Board, ACC and various government agencies.

Collectively the board is responsible for the delivery of emergency preparedness, alcohol and drug harm minimisation, crime prevention, and accident and injury prevention.

As chair of the board I’m privileged to work with a group of people who are so committed and passionate about looking after our city’s residents and visitors.

These are people who are out there on the frontline day in day out making sure our people are safe and have access to the resources and support they need.

Council also employs a Safe City Co-ordinator who is responsible for tracking the effectiveness of our community safety programmes, reporting on key projects, and preparing for our reaccreditation process in 2019.

I look forward to keeping you updated on the things we’re doing to keep you safe around our city and community.
