The issue of the birds in The Square continues.

Long have they been a problem in the area, making it impossible to utitlise the car parks on the park side of The Square, lest we end up with a car covered in bird droppings.

After a series of failed tested solutions, the current solution of bird scarer devices installed in the trees doesn’t seem to be working either.

It’s interesting to hear that an expert from Massey University, in our story on Page 6, says the bird scarers will not work, or at least not for long.

Did the city council not consult experts before investing in the devices?

The suggestion of hanging sails below the trees to collect the droppings as fertiliser seems to be the best idea so far.

Not only would it prevent cars from being damaged and the footpaths from being messed up - to be able to reuse the excrement for an environmental purpose would be applauded.
