Be careful what you wish for
Erinn Hayes can’t wait to get back to New Zealand and, ironically, now she has time to make the trip.
The Kevin Can Wait (TVNZ 2, Wednesday) star was axed from the show two days after she told TV Guide how much she was looking forward to its second series – and how keen she was to find time to revisit the holiday home her father and his brothers own in Golden Bay.
“The only sure thing about television is that all shows end,” Hayes said. “You just never know what kind of ride you are going to go on.”
At the time, she was excited that her husband had taken time off from his career so the family could move to New York for the show’s second season.
“Last season it was just me commuting back and forth between California, where my family live, and New York, where we shoot the show, and that was tricky and terrible so this year we’re all moving out to New York,” the mother of two said.
Hayes’ ride came to a halt two days later, when CBS announced the actress had been fired from the show in which she plays Donna, the wife of retired New York cop Kevin (Kevin James).
Hayes confirmed the news on Twitter,
writing, “True, I’ve been let go from the show. Very sad, I had a great experience season 1. Thank you for all the support from our wonderful fans.”
Sources say the decision to fire Hayes was a matter of the show going in a different creative direction, and not a reflection of the actress’ performance.
Details are being kept under wraps about how Donna’s failure to return in season two will be explained but she will be replaced by Leah Remini, who played James’ wife for nine years on The King Of Queens. Remini, who Hayes described as “a nice lady and a real pro”, guest-starred in the show’s season finale (yet to screen in New Zealand) as Kevin’s former work colleague, a tough, wise-cracking police officer named Vanessa Cellucci. She is expected to reprise that role in Kevin Can Wait.
