Bernadette Morrison casts her critical eye over the houses on The Block NZ.
Real estate agent Bernadette Morrison has a long association with The Block NZ.
Morrison, who is one of two judges on this season’s show, where the houses are in the Auckland suburb of Northcote, casts a critical eye over the various finished rooms.
She says it is a privilege to be a judge on the renovation series.
“It’s my second time judging but I’ve actually been involved with The
Block right from day one,” she says. “For the first series I was actually one of the agents selling The Block. And when it was in Pt Chevalier we managed the team that was selling them because by then I had moved into management and then, obviously, for the fourth season I got invited in to judge the villas and then I got invited back this time.”
Along with interior designer and fellow judge Jason Bonham, Morrison, who has been in the property business for nearly 14 years, draws on her professional experience when it comes to deciding which team renovated a particular room or space the best.
“We try to be fair and obviously we try to judge on the merits of A, the room, and B, the design as well so we’ve got four houses that are very similar.
“So what I’m looking for is probably slightly different to Jason in that I’m not only looking for the design but I’m also looking for ... they’ve got to sell these houses, so are they thinking about layout?
“Because obviously this year the teams have had the capacity to change the layout they were given from the architects if they wanted to.
“So I’m looking at how versatile the rooms are, how they lay them out, are they thinking about family spaces, are they thinking about basically who is going to buy the house and how that’s going to appeal to a wider market? Obviously the more people that like it, the higher the price should be on auction day.”
