High hopes
Since the Women’s Hockey World Cup began in 1974, only five different nations have featured in the final – and one of those, Canada, had just one sole appearance as runners-up in 1983.
The event has been dominated by the Netherlands (who have won seven times and been runners-up a further four) along with Australia, Argentina and West Germany, who have each won the event twice. Australia and Argentina have been losing finalists three times while West Germany has been runners-up twice.
New Zealand’s best finish so far is fourth in 1986. But hopes are high for a good showing at this year’s event in London, particularly after winning gold at the Commonwealth Games, beating Australia 4-1 in the final.
The Black Sticks’ squad has plenty of experience, being led by Stacey Michelsen who has played 254 tests for New Zealand.
