The Longest Ride Three, 1pm Starring Britt Robertson, Scott Eastwood. Based on Nicholas Sparks’ best-selling book, this romantic drama centres on a rodeo rider and his girlfriend whose complicated life mirrors that of an elderly man and his wife, whom they become involved with. The book centred more around the elderly couple while the film reverses that, losing some of the poignancy. ★★★

Dunkirk Sky Premiere, 8.30pm Starring Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy. More of a disaster movie than a war film, it focuses on the evacuation of 400,000 Allied troops from the shores of northern France, with Germany on the brink of winning the war before it even really started. This might be an unashamedly British offering, but it’s hard not to be moved by the bravery of those involved, who most likely stopped Britain becoming a vassal state of Nazi Germany. ★★★★★

Thor: The Dark World TVNZ 2, 8.35pm

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman. This sequel revisits the same ground of Thor without looking too stale. A lot is down to Chris Hemsworth, who may have been born to play Thor, all flowing golden locks and enormous hammer. Portman is again the love interest as the two worlds of Earth and Asgard intertwine. This time-space anomaly provides a blank canvas and some light relief – such as when a bewildered Portman is taken home to meet the parents. ★★★

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country M ori TV, 8.30pm Starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy. The crew of the Starship Enterprise is forced to revise the thinking of a lifetime when the Klingons sue for peace and a place in the Federation. ★★★

Did You Hear About The Morgans? Bravo, 8.30pm Starring Hugh Grant, Sarah Jessica Parker. The movie is fine but Love Actually and Sex And The City don’t quite work as a pairing. Grant and Parker play a yuppie couple sent to the Rockies on a witness protection programme after they witness a murder. ★★★

Little Man TVNZ Duke, 8.30pm

Starring Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans. The Wayans don’t make classics, but they do a good line in belly-laugh comedy. If you have seen Scary Movie or White Chicks, you should know whether you will enjoy this. ★★
