Going out with the birds

After the results of the New Zealand Bird of the Year competition, Seven Sharp had an item about a man who doesn’t like the kakapo and was promoting the lesser-known birds. His favourite was the grey warbler and there was a clip of it singing. I have often heard this bird but never knew what it was. It reminded me that National Radio used to play and identify bird songs in the mornings. I think it would be wonderful if Seven Sharp finished each night with a clip of one of the birds in New Zealand singing – it would help all of us to know and appreciate what birds we have and what their calls are like. And it may even mean a new winner in next year’s Bird of the Year.
