We are a rich country, we can afford to ensure everyone has a warm, dry secure home. The Opportunities Party (TOP) is the only party that will restore housing affordability.

New Zealand has the lowest taxes on housing in the world, we invest more in housing than any other country in the world, and we have some of the highest house prices in the world. This isn’t rocket science – we need to tax housing like other assets.

TOP doesn’t want to just tax capital gain, we want to kill capital gain entirely. If we hold house prices stable over time affordability will be restored. This tax reformwould also penalise land bankers, encouraging them to build houses. We would use the $11b in revenue to reduce income taxes by around a third, so that renters, wage and salary earners are all better off. In fact 80 per cent of Kiwis would be better off.
