Former Air New Zealand chief executive Rob Fyfe has switched from heading a company flying passengers, to one producing merino apparel. Last year Mr Fyfe was appointed chairman of Icebreaker, where Jeremy Moon was chief executive. But now the pair have switched roles with Mr Fyfe again in the chief executive’s seat. At a recent launch of their new retail store in Ponsonby, Auckland [ the 24th location in Icebreaker’s global network of retail stores] and the relocation upstairs of the Icebreaker head office from Wellington, Mr Fyfe said he was often brought into turn around companies that were not doing very well, but at Icebreaker the company was already doing well. “We are currently turning over $ 220 million and my role is to turn this into a half billion dollar company,” he said. Asked to comment on Air New Zealand’s decision to scrap its fleet of 19- seat planes flying to small regional centres, Mr Fyfe said the planes were not losing money under his watch. He did add that the planes have been getting old and would require high maintenance, but more importantly there was no one making planes of that size any more.
