For those of you who have been reading Travel Digest over the past 20 years, you will know of my penchant to latch on to my distant French heritage and to use the occasional French phrase. Au revoir is the French way of saying goodbye and yes, I am saying goodbye. It is 20 years ago I set up Methode Media and for most of that time I have been editing Travel Digest, among other magazines. Editing Travel Digest has taken me on writing expeditions to all continents of the world – Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe, North America, South America and Antarctica [well actually it was the sub-Antarctic islands]. This has included places as diverse as the Maldives, Tahiti, Indonesia, the United States, South Africa, Germany, England, China, Australia, France, Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai, Samoa, India, Fiji, Monaco, Sarawak and the Antipodes Islands – to name just a few. Many of the trips have been to attend travel markets – the most memorable being ITB Berlin, the World Travel Market in London and the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai. To describe a travel market to someone who does not work in the industry is always a challenge – well it is where travel buyers, meet travel sellers to orchestrate business transactions between both – is one description. It has been a fascinating ride, to work in such a vibrant industry and one that is rapidly becoming one of the fastest growing economic drivers in the world. In our own country, I have been quietly watching the rise and rise of both tourism and travel and the influx of new aircraft flying to our shores – the likes of Philippine Airlines, China Southern, Air China, United Airlines, American Airlines, Air Asia X, Qatar Airways and Hong Kong Airlines. Then of course, the record numbers of cruise ships arriving here each year. The travel and the magazine deadlines have sometimes meant a back seat for my family and so by the time you are reading this, I will be giving back a little to a family member who needs a lot of care and love at this time. The new publisher, I am delighted to advise, is Tatyana Pikhtina, who has been in a management role at Methode Media for the past eight years. And the new editor is Courtney Devereux, who has been writing studiously over recent months for both Travel Digest and our sister magazine New Zealand Fitness. Au revoir pour le moment.
