DOC to build new facility at Camp Kaitoke

Upper Hutt Leader - - NEWS -

One of the most popular entrances to the Tararua Forest Park is about to get a major upgrade.

There are currently two entrance points to the park at Kaitoke – one at the end of Marchant Rd and the other in Camp Kaitoke.

Cars in the Marchant car park have been subjected to vandalism and the area is also used to dump rubbish.

Last week the Department of Conservation announced it plans to close the Marchant car park and build a new facility near the entrance to Camp Kaitoke.

The new car park will be on the left hand side of Kiwi Ranch Rd and will have a toilet, information panels and a track connecting it to the Puffer Saddle, Smiths Creek and Marchant Ridge tracks. The work is due to be completed in April.

Kaitoke is used as a starting/finishing point for the Southern Crossing, from Kaitoke to Otaki, as well as an access point to the Tauherenikau Valley.
